A person working in a bakery will have a wide range of roles and responsibilities. These may include:
- Receiving deliveries and unloading vans.
- Moving large sacks of flour and other ingredients.
- Mixing and baking ingredients according to specific recipes to make all sorts of baked goods
- Checking the quality of ingredients.
- Preparing equipment for baking, measuring and weighing flour and other ingredients, and combining measured ingredients in mixers or blenders.
- Kneading, rolling, cutting, and shaping dough, placing the dough in pans, moulds, or on sheets.
- Using commercial ovens by placing and baking items in hot ovens or grills.
- In addition, they may be responsible for the overall management of the bakery, such as ordering supplies, overseeing employees, setting prices, and providing customer service.
Some of these tasks may not be appropriate or safe for a person with significant mobility impairment, especially a person that uses a wheelchair. It is also worth noting that if such a person was permitted to work in this type of environment, there might be workplace health and safety issues in ensuring a safe workplace.
On this basis, employee-only restricted work areas may be considered exempt from all accessibility requirements under the Premises Standards and BCA requirements.
